New Delhi: US President Donald Trump formally announced the first charter of the Board of Peace on Thursday. Modeled after the United Nations, the Board of Peace will initially focus on Gaza, but its scope could expand to resolve conflicts worldwide. Several countries, including Pakistan, have agreed to become members.
At the launch of the Board of Peace, Trump said that under the Gaza ceasefire deal, Hamas would have to lay down its arms, or it would be the end of the Palestinian movement.
Trump said, "They have to lay down their arms, and if they don't, it will be the end of them." He further added that the Islamic group was born with rifles in their hands. More than a dozen presidents, prime ministers, and top diplomats from various countries were present at the announcement of the Board of Peace at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Among those present were Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Argentinian President Javier Milei, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Trump further stated, "Once this board is fully established, we can do almost anything we want to do. And we will do it in conjunction with the United Nations." He added that the UN has a lot of potential that has not been fully utilized. Trump, who will chair the board, invited dozens of other world leaders to join and said he wants it to address challenges beyond the faltering ceasefire in Gaza, raising concerns that it could undermine the UN's role as the primary platform for global diplomacy and conflict resolution.
Other major global powers and traditional Western allies of the US are also hesitant to join this board, which Trump says will require permanent members to contribute $1 billion each. Besides the United States, no other permanent member of the United Nations Security Council—the five countries that have had the most influence on international law and diplomacy since the end of World War II—has yet agreed to join.
Several heads of state present at the forum signed the documents to become members of the Board of Peace. Following this, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the board's charter has now been fully implemented and it has become an international organization. The signing ceremony took place in Davos, Switzerland, where the annual World Economic Forum is being held, bringing together global political and business leaders.
